Bad Astronomy

Facts
My first fact was that we can predict the trajectory of meteors. I was right in that we can predict it, but it would take much longer than it did in the movie

My second fact was the you could be instantly blinded by the sun. He would not have been burned as quickly as he was and NASA would have given him some protection.

Fake
I thought the nukes would not blow up the comet. The amount of explosive they used would not have worked, however, given enough time and explosive it could be deflected.

The comet moving so slow was obviously fake. As fast as the comet was said to be moving the shockwave would knock everyone down even before the comet hit.

Bio-Bottle Results and Conclusions

Both George’s and my bio-bottle peaked at about a height of 45 cm and then both died out. The control bottle reached a height of 50cm. It slowly died, it declined to 40cm  and a couple of days later there wasn’t anything left. Variable 1 got to a height of 41cm  and then died.
The constant bio-bottle consisted of dirt, tomato seeds, water, rocks, and 2 bottles. We put 8 seeds in and gave it 40 ml of water each day. We set up the bottles the same way except for the mount of dirt.
One of the variable bottles had the broken glass from a light bulb and the other had the metal parts from the light bulb.
1)      My hypothesis was correct I expected that the constant would grow the most.
2)      The constant did the best but only barely so more testing would be needed to determine if light bulbs have a dramatic effect on the biosphere.
3)      We didn’t add the same amount of dirt to each bottle and we didn’t water the plants on the weekend. This could have decreased the growth o the plant. Also Sid didn’t keep track of… anything, so we don’t know if the 2nd variable bottle had a clear effect.
4)      For the variables we tested we were able to track their progress well, except for the 2nd variable. We were limited by the fact that we couldn’t test mercury.
5)      Our Lexus project is about recycling light bulbs because they can be harmful to the environment.
6)      Yes it showed that light bulbs, not even ones with mercury, can be destructive to the environment.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is a problem that is affecting people and the environment. Climate change may directly affect human health through increases in average temperature. Such increases may lead to more extreme heat waves during the summer while producing less extreme cold spells during the winter. Rising average temperatures are predicted to increase the incidence of heat waves and hot extremes.
All regions of the world show an overall net negative impact of climate change on water resources and freshwater ecosystems. Areas in which runoff is projected to decline are likely to face a reduction in the value of the services provided by water resources.

sewer treatment

We learned about our sewer system and how it works.  One of the first steps is filteration, there is a huge filter that takes out larger solids.  The water is then pumped into big tanks where micro-organisms break down whats left. After the water is treated it is pumped back into the river.

Down town construction

1) Mrs. Byrely is a secratary

2) The city improved our drainage systems so that when it rains the run off is filtered before it enters the Grand River.

3) Instead of all of the contaminents that are on the island just going to the river with the rain water it is filtered out.

4) There should be less total dissolved solids in the river the next time we test it.

5) The most interesting thing i learned yesterday was that we have pourus parking lots to help filter the rain water.

6) My bio-bottle seems to be doing very well, it is the control so it is growing like it should.

7) I havent done anything for my action project yet im not quite sure what to do.

8)  I am done with a couple of my slides.

Light bulbs

I plan on educationg people on the harmfull effects of light bulbs and letting people know about our light bulb recycleing program at school. I did not even know we had a recycling program for lightbulbs. If more people kne about the program more people ould use it, which would help the enironment.

We ill be testing the harmfull effects of the glass and the metal from lightbulbs, seperately. We have a control bottle, and two variable bottles, one with glass and one with metal. We will be trying to grow tomatoes in our bio bottles.

The river water quality test we were assigned is total dissolved solids. The test will show whether there is any solids in the water that shouldn't be there. when a light bulb is broke the glass the metal and the mercury gas in th light bulb, depending on the type of light bulb, can be harmful to the environment. This is why it is important to recycle the light bulbs and not just throw them away, because they will eventually get into the water. All though recycling them is good we have to be careful because we are just gathering up a whole bunch of the hazardous materials in one place. Mrs. Grivins told us about this.

Feild trip

Eaton Rapids has two types of well filtration. One type is gravel and the other is porous rock. The porous rock takes way longer for water to filter through it, so the water is cleaner. The gravel rock is still effective just not as good as the stone. Eaton rapids has two elevated water tanks, each tank has 1,000,000 gallons of water. We use these tanks to create water pressure which allows use to use fire hydrants and other things. Even though we have two tanks, if we had a bad fire then we would go thruogh the water fast. You experienced how global-thermal heating and cooling works, it uses the water to keep the air temperature at about 52 degrees. In the summer it cools the house by blowing the cool air around, in the winter the inside air is only 52 degrees so it has to heat it less.

I did not go on the feild trip.

Small City Water

The drinking water, for the small city of Eaton Rapids, comes from 6 local wells. Eaton Rapids has a 3.6 million gallon per day capicity, we also have 2 one million gallon elevated storage tanks. We have 44 miles of water mains, 569 water valves, and 298 fire hydrants. We have a water treatment center that removes some of iron, adds chlorine for disinfection, and adds flouride for dental benefits.

Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP)
The WWTP is designed to treat an average waste water flow of 1.2 Million Gallons per day (MGD) and a maximum flow of 2.0MGD
Approximately 120 English Dry ton of bio-solids are generated and land applied annually.

The WWTP discharges treated plant effluent into the Grand River.

Assignment 1

1) http://www.carbonfootprint.com/

2) No, i found the site confusing even for me. I would not recommend this to any younger kids.

3) 23.86 metric tons of CO

4)A) I could carpool with other people.
   B) Turn off some of the lights. We don't need as many as we have, if half were on we would be fine.
   C) Improve our recycling program would definitely help the community.

5) Being so close to the Grand River, and the Great Lakes everything we do effects the water shed. Every living thing needs water in some way. If we let our water source be contaminated then every thing around us will suffer.    I'm sure that if everyone knew what they were doing they would try to at least reduce the damage they are doing. I think that carbon footprint calculators could be very helpful in informing people what they are doing to our environment.
